JAG began with a Cuban immigrant, Juan A. Gutierrez, who came to the U.S. as a child and worked his way from engineering student to founder of his own civil construction company. Founded in New Jersey in 1978 as Northeast Utilities, the company grew steadily from sewer and water pipeline work into a construction powerhouse, successively bringing Remsco Associates, Caldwell Divers, Huxted Tunneling and ECI Drilling into the fold. As his company grew, so did Juan’s reputation, ultimately becoming an industry legend named to the Utility & Transportation Contractors Association Hall of Fame, among other industry honors.

During a trip abroad, Juan was struck by the strength, dignity and determination of the African rhino. The rhino would become the symbol for the business that would be his legacy: JAG Companies, Inc., founded in 2009. Shortly after, Juan assumed the role of chairman, and handed operational responsibility of the companies to his son, Rolando (Roly) Acosta – along with the work ethic and values that still thrive within JAG.
